About 4G Phones and Wireless Communications

Current 3G Mobile Phones

What is 4G?

4G technology represents the speed needed for applications like video calling and mobile TV to work quickly. Whilst the mobile Internet tools have improved 3G mobile technology is too slow. 4G wireless and broadband is to step in.

The ITU (International Telecommunication Union) have finally decided on a standard for 4G.

4G represents the fourth generation of mobile wireless standards.
Planned 4G peak download speeds:

  • 100 Mbit/s = High Mobility comm's
    (i.e. Cars & Trains)
  • 1 Gbit/s = Low Mobility comm's
(such as pedestrians and stationary users).

With increased capacity and speed, with 4G the broadband dongle and modem becomes suitable for ISP's and internet access on home computers. Removing the need for a fixed connection and cabling.

Representing 4G speeds substantially higher than anything on current 3G. Until then, you'll be able to use as much bandwidth as you like so that you can maintain high speeds without your ISP having to slow you down.
Mobile networks in the US

Carriers in the USA, offering 4G services (that may not meet the UK 4G Standard) have adopted different 4G Technology. At the time of writing:

Sprint : WiMax technology (5-12Mbps)
Verizon Wireless : LTE Long Term Evolution (3-6Mbps)
T Mobile : HSPA+ - 3G with 4G speeds.

Slow in comparison to 4G's maximum 100Mbps (UK 4G Standard)

4G Technology
3G phones have been around for 10 years! It does allow for slow video call, Internet browsing, emailing and tethering (allowing the device to send out a wireless signal like a home wireless modem) etc.

4G has involved the typical battle between emerging 4G mobile technology. Wi-Max which appears to have lost to LTE, and an improved version of 3G called HSPA.

Now that a standard has been set, the 4G spectrum allowing for the best 4G broadband and mobile services can be created.

LTE: 150 mega bits per second, compared to 3G networks with speeds of up to 7 mega bits per second, (subject to location and network). It looks like the chosen 4G Technology for companies selling 4G in the UK

Wi-Max: Aimed at providing wireless 4G broadband access and 4G computer networking, apposed to mobile phone services. Allowing for 4G potential, even though it may have lost out to LTE.

HSPA: Often touted as 3G+ with speeds of around 21 Mbps. HSPA services and mobile phones can be considered as a stop gap.

The future
Video calling has failed to taken hold, probably due to it costing often over 3 times a standard call. Possibly the same issue with the adoption of MMS. Sometimes £5 a pop! Subsequently, the cost of using new 4G tools and 4G services depend as much on the fees as the availability of 4G within the UK.

Once 4G speeds are reached, 4G suppliers in the UK will find demand from those wishing to use cloud computing and mobile (Adroid / iPhone & iPad apps. Gathering resources in the wireless airwaves rather than stored within the 4G mobile device.

With so much new data to accommodate, it will be a welcome change to deal with chores on the go or to relax the moment one is not busy. Watching and responding to messages on the train, for instance. Whether this will increase the time everyone is 'on call', is another discussion entirely!

4G will be an enormous change and will at last offer fun information, on the go.
